Design and Technology will prepare students to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world. Students will gain awareness and learn from wider influences on Design and Technology including historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic factors. Students will get the opportunity to work creatively when designing and making and apply technical and practical expertise.

The GCSE allows students to study core technical and designing and making principles, including a broad range of design processes, materials techniques and equipment. They will also have the opportunity to study specialist technical principles in greater depth e.g. Timber.

Working Independently
Assessment in Design Tech

KS3 students use self-assessment descriptors to assess their own learning and teachers reinforce this on how to improve their work with regular feedback.
Year 10 students use self-assessment descriptors to assess their own learning and teachers reinforce this on how to improve their work with regular feedback. Students will also be tested on knowledge of design technology through mini tests and full length exams.

Design Technology:
Component 1:  Principles of Design Technology, 2 Hour written Exam.
Component 2:  Non Examined Assessment (NEA) 25 hour classroom based assessment to investigate, design, make and evaluate a product based around a theme set by the exam board.

Food and Nutrition: 
Component 1: Principles of Food Preparation and Nutrition Written paper 1 hour 45 minutes (50% of total marks)
Component 2: Food Preparation and Nutrition in Action Controlled Assessment (50% of total marks) Component 2 consists of 2 assessments, as listed below:

Component 2: Assessment 1 – 8 hours, Food investigation assessment A scientific food investigation which will assess knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to scientific principles underlying the preparation and cooking of food.
Component 2: Assessment 2 – 12 hours, Food preparation assessment Prepare, cook and present a menu which assesses knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to the planning, preparation, cooking and presentation of food.

Personal Development and Cultural Capital in Design Tech

The Design Department offers a STEAM club for all years to design and make products of their choice, Lego club, Drone club/competition, take part in an Electric car competition and also a GCSE club to help students with exam preparation.

Mr Mottley has a BA Hons and PGCE in Design which he studied at Middlesex University. He has 20 years experience teaching Design and Technology at a variety of schools.  Mr Mottley enjoys designing and making things at home and school and is a DIY expert.

Mr Fair studied at University of Suffolk and University of Cambridge. He has 15 years experience working in the hospitality industry in England and overseas, and 15 years experience working in education, including partnerships with alternative education providers. Mr Fair is a keen artist (painting and photography) and speaks fluently in Spanish.

Ms Garland is a graphics specialist, having gained a 1st degree in Design for Publishing from Norwich University of the Arts followed by a career in graphic design. She gained her PGCE through the University of Suffolk and enjoys bringing her real world design experience into the classroom.

Mrs Nimmock has worked at Northgate since 2005 where she has very much enjoyed her time. She is passionate about Textiles and thoroughly enjoys teaching it to both KS3 & KS4. As well as time in the classroom, Mrs Nimmock enjoys taking part in visits both locally and further afield.
