ERIN: Everyone Reads in Northgate
As you may be aware, literacy is a topic that has been given a high priority for the development of learners in school. It is also a skill that is vital to the future success of our pupils. Here at Northgate High School we have been working hard to put together plans for both boosting and supporting literacy developments.
As part of our on-going programme of activities, we would like to tell you about an exciting new reading scheme at Northgate. During each Monday registration period every student in Years 7 to 9 will read one of their favourite books. Years 10 and 11 will do the same during each Wednesday registration. They will be joined by members of staff, both teaching and associate, in a mass celebration of reading for pleasure.
As parents we would like you to be aware that your son/daughter will need to bring in a book from home to read. This can be any book that they enjoy. Those forgetting or simply turning up without a book will be lent one which has been carefully chosen to appeal to teenage readers. Form tutors will ensure that the books are kept safely from one week to the next.
We would also like to hear about your experiences of reading and will be inviting you to take place in a survey where you can tell us about your favourite books. If you are feeling brave, you may also be able to volunteer to share your love of reading so that our pupils get the message that reading is something enjoyed by everyone.
Research from other schools around the UK has shown that, where such reading schemes take place, literacy levels improve and previously reluctant readers discover that they can and do enjoy books. The scheme has also been found to be an effective way to show the school community working together. We very much hope that you will support us in ensuring that Northgate experiences the same improvements and welcome your input into the future education of all of our pupils.
Yours sincerely,
Dr A Barrett, Head of Geography
