On Thursday 16th November four pupils from Year 7 and 8 journeyed to Neatherd High School for the Norfolk Heat of the Kids Lit Quiz.
The Kids Lit Quiz is an annual literature quiz for children aged 10-13 years. Quizzes are held internationally and the winning team from each heat competes in a national final. National champions go on to compete in an international final which is held in a different country each year.
In the regional heats pupils are asked 100 questions on a variety of topics related to children’s literature. This year’s quiz included questions on fantasy novels, fictional bears and hunters.
The Northgate Team was made up of Charlie Mclaughlin (7APM), Barney Smith (8CMY), Amelia Thurgill (8NS) and Jimmy Cockburn (8LM). The team met up regularly before the event to quiz each other using questions from previous years and couldn’t wait to test themselves against other Norfolk Schools.
29 teams from schools across Norfolk took part in the quiz with City of Norwich School taking 1st place. The Northgate Team ended up with a very respectable score of 67 (out of 110) earning them 8th place.
In between each round, the quizmaster also asked bonus questions for which students could win a cash prize. Barney was extremely pleased to win £2 for a correct answer!
Pupils also had the opportunity to meet authors Alexander Gordon Smith and Alexander Scarrow and have copies of their books signed.
Charlie told us: “I really enjoyed the Kids Lit Quiz because it was an amazing opportunity to discover what amazing things Northgate does for us students.”
The team had a fantastic afternoon celebrating the joys of reading. We can’t wait to compete again next year!
