On Tuesday 27th June, Northgate played host to pupils from Toftwood Junior, Garvestone Primary, Thomas Bullock, Dereham Church of England Junior Academy, Scarning Primary, Beetley St Marys and Mattishall Primary School for a Primary Maths Challenge. It was great to have some enthusiastic and competitive mathematicians, ready to take on the challenge. Teams were made up of 4 Year 5 and 6 pupils who faced 3 rounds of competition before the winners were announced.
The first round was the shuttle round – a chance to get some valuable points on the board, with some tricky questions being attempted. The Logic round had 50 points were up for grabs. This was a popular round and a successful one for a number of the teams who scored full marks. Then it was time for a quick break and a chance to re-group and get ready for the final round. The scores were close so it was all to play for. There were just 4 points separating the top 3 teams!
The final round was the Relay round – pupils were not only testing their mathematical knowledge and team work but there was running involved too! This round was very frantic with pairs running to and fro, checking their answers and gaining those valuable points. It was clear for most that this was their favourite round – there was lots of encouragement and cheering of team mates.
Whilst the totals were check, Heads of School, Mrs Galley and Dr Hone spoke to students and heard all about the competition. It was then time for the results: in 3rd place was Beetley St Marys, two points ahead of them in 2nd place was Mattishall. Just four points ahead and determined to win after finishing joint 2nd last year was Thomas Bullock. A jubilant team received their special trophy from Dr Hone and Mrs Galley and posed for a winner’s photo.
Congratulations to the winners and all those who took part. It was a lovely event and great to see so much enthusiasm and competitiveness for everyone.
