Year 7 and 8 students and staff from Northgate High School were thinking of others last week as they collected items for the Mid-Norfolk Foodbank as part of a year group community project.

Form Captains and Vice Captains were joined by Miss Theobald, one of the Year 7 tutors and Dr Hone, Head of School. They proudly handed over the donations to a trustee of the foodbank. He explained to the students that The Mid-Norfolk Foodbank serves Dereham, Fakenham, Swaffham and surrounding villages. In a typical year, donations of 40,000 – 50,000kg of food are given by individuals, community groups, schools and churches and local businesses, including the 2 major Dereham supermarkets.

The food will be made up into food parcels, by volunteers, for individuals and families. The food parcels are designed to provide a minimum of three days of nutritionally balanced, non-perishable, tinned and dried foods. A typical food parcel includes: breakfast cereal, soup, pasta, rice, pasta sauce, baked beans, tinned meat, tinned vegetables, instant mash, UHT milk, tea, coffee, sugar, tinned dessert and biscuits. In a typical year, 1,500 parcels are given out serving a total of 4,000 people.

All those who donated from Northgate hope the donations spread a little festive cheer this Christmas to those who receive them.
