Two of our Northgate News Team members, Colette and Poppy decided to interview Mr Everett, Head of Modern Foreign Languages at Northgate. There were some weird and wonderful questions! It’s always fascinating to find out a bit more about staff members at school.

How long have you been teaching at Northgate and have you had any other jobs other than being a teacher?

This is my 18th Year at Northgate. I also write textbooks and other teaching resources. I once used to sell broken biscuits on a market in Mexico.

Apart from languages, what was your favourite subject at school and why?

I used to like physics because like languages, if you learn the rules, you can quickly understand lots of things clearly instead of having to memorise lots of confusing facts.

How many times have you been to France?

Too many times to remember! I worked in a school in France for a year before going to Mexico.

How many different languages do you speak?

I learned Latin and German at school but I can’t speak any, so English, French and Spanish.

What is a sausage roll panini?

So, at Dereham Sixth Form, the canteen sells panini and sausage rolls, and I realised that the sausage roll exactly fits into a panino so if you ask nicely, they will make you a sausage roll panino. With Branston pickle. But if you do eat one, you won’t have to eat for the rest of the week!

What is the coffee cup invention?

The edible coffee cup is the solution to the problem of disposable coffee cups.

You have lots of different ideas and inventions – tell us about the inflatable bicycle idea

So, if you have to lock your bike up, and then when you get back someone has taken it, well what if you had a bike that would deflate so you could take it with you? That is the inflatable bicycle.

We hear you’ve been in a music video, how did this come about?

So it was 1989 and I was with some of my French friends in Paris and someone from the TV show Lunettes Noires pour Nuits Blanches came up to us and asked us to be in Sam Brown’s song ‘Stop’, so we went along and got featured in her music video!

Thank you to Colette and Poppy for this interview and to Mr Everett for taking the time to answer the questions. We look forward to seeing who is next to be interviewed.
