Wednesday 13th March saw Northgate pupils take to the water to represent their houses in the annual swimming gala at Dereham Leisure Centre. Over a hundred pupils donned their swim gear to compete for points for their respective houses. Pupils showed fantastic levels of resilience and competitive spirit giving their all to do their best for their houses and there was a great atmosphere around the pool with 3 new records set on the day.
At the half way point Holmes took an early lead in first place followed by Hawking, Attenborough then Rowling. During this session two records were broken both by Rowling’s Ruby (Year 9). She broke the previous record of 22.03s with an impressive new time of 18.07s for the Year 9/10 girls 25m breaststroke. She also set a new record for the Year 9/10 girls 25m Butterfly in a new time 15.09 knocking over a second off the previous record of 16.20s. Even more impressive is that the previous records were set by Year 10 pupils.
In the final session another record was broken by Year 7 swimmer Thomas who broke the previous record of 34.34s in the 50 freestyle event in a new time of 34.31s. Going into the final event, the cannon relay, which involves a male and female swimmer from each year group competing in an 8 length relay. the positions were Holmes, Attenborough, Hawking and Rowling. After the frenzy that is the cannon relay the gap between 3rd and 4th places was only 4 points and the gap between 1st and 2nd was only a two point difference, so who had won?
A huge well done to all the competitors for stepping up to represent their houses and a big congratulations to our new record holders.
